Herpes is one of the viral diseases producing eruption of small blisterlike vesicles on the skin or mucous membranes, some types of herpes are herpes simplex or herpes zoster. Herpes can also be defined as a family of viruses. Herpes is the infection with one of the human herpesviruses.Herpes simplex type 1 which is also termed as human herpesvirus 1 (HHV-1), brings cold sores and fever blisters in the mouth and around it. In simple words, Herpes is an inflammatory skin disease caused by small vesicles in clusters. Herpes can be oral and genital.

 

Symptoms of Herpes

Some of the common symptoms of Herpes are:

  • Small, red bumps and blisters (vesicles)
  • Open sores (ulcers)
  • Excessive pain
  • Itching  

Causes of Herpes

 Some most common causes of Herpes are:

  • Herpes is generally caused by two types of herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections - HSV type 1 and HSV type 2.
  • HSV type 1 causes cold sores or fever blisters around the mouth, an after effect of oral sex, the latter spreads through sexual contact and skin-to-skin contact.
  • HSV type 2 virus causes blisters or groups of small ulcers (open sores) on and around the genitals, in both men and women. Though a highly contagious disease, the infection cannot spread through contact with toilets, towels or other objects used by an infected person, as the virus dies quickly, once out of the body.
  • Genital herpes is spread by direct contact with an infected person. Sexual intercourse and oral sex are the most common methods of spreading genital herpes. Any type of skin-to-skin contact, however, is capable of spreading herpes.

Home Remedies for Herpes

The most effective home remedies for Herpes are:

  • The most popular and effective home remedies for herpes is rub ice on the herpes for a few minutes. It would provide instant healing effect.
  • Take a cup of olive oil and pour it in a pot. Add some bee wax and lavender oil to it and cook the mixture. When cooked, allow it to cool. Thereafter, coat it on the herpes.
  • In 3 liters of water, add 25 grams each of dried mullein, mallow roots and marsh mallow roots. Simmer it for about 3 minutes. Filter the mixture and use on a compress day and might. This would reduce irritation and also prevent herpes.
  • Grate a carrot and wrap it in a cloth. Apply this on the blisters. It would lessen glandular swelling and alleviate the pain, thereby, providing healing effect.
  • Prepare black coffee without sugar. After having the coffee, apply the remains in the cup, on the herpes.
  • Take some baking powder and pat a cotton ball with it over the infected area. This would be beneficial in treating herpes.
  • Take 5 drops each of Bergamot oil and eucalyptus oil. Coat this mix on the herpes affected area after every few minutes.
  • Increase in the consumption of foods rich in vitamins, zinc and iron. It is also advisable to have lots of leafy vegetables and fruits.

Herpes Treatment and Advice

  • Hygiene is important. Avoid touching the sores. Wash hands frequently during the day.
  • Fingernails should be scrubbed daily. Keep the body clean.
  • Blisters or sores should be kept clean and dry with an agent such as cornstarch. (Talcum powder should never be used because it is associated with an increased risk for ovarian cancer.)
  • Some people report that drying the genital area with a blow dryer on the cool setting offers relief.
  • Avoid tight-fitting clothing, which restricts air circulation and slows healing of the sores.
  • Choose cotton underwear, rather than synthetic materials.
