Anorexia or Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder. People suffering from Anorexia have extreme weight loss due to their refusal to eat a healthy diet because of an obsessive fear of gaining weight which is born out of a distorted self image. Anorexia is a serious mental illness which in many cases is accompanied by additional diseases and disorders. Among all the psychiatric disorders, the death rate is highest due to Anorexia.

Contrary to the common belief that Anorexia affects on young white women, Anorexia can affect men and women from all backgrounds. 

Symptoms of Anorexia

Symptoms of Anorexia are:

  • Obvious, rapid, dramatic weight loss
  • Scarring of the knuckles from placing fingers down the throat to induce vomiting
  • Soft, fine hair grows on face and body
  • Dieting despite being thin or dangerously underweight.
  • Fear of gaining weight or becoming overweight.
  • Perceives self to be overweight despite being told by others they are too thin.
  • Frequently complains of being cold due to loss of insulating body fat; body temperature lowers (hypothermia) in effort to conserve calories.
  • May frequently be in a sad, lethargic state.
  • Cheeks may become swollen due to enlargement of the salivary glands caused by excessive vomiting

Home Remedies for Anorexia

Home Remedies described hereunder may help to cure Anorexia at a large extent:

  • A major home remedy for Anorexia is the ginger and rock salt treatment. One can take a little piece of ginger and peel it off. Make it paste by adding few drops of lemon, very little asafetida, and one black pepper. Mix it up and have it daily on empty stomach at least for 15 days.
  • Having about 2-3 oranges a day is extremely beneficial. This is very useful diet for Anorexia.
  • Apples also work as efficient appetizers. Apart from providing iron to the body, they also stimulate the appetite.
  • Sour grapes are another effective remedy for Anorexia. The juice of these grapes should be used in kneading the flour before preparing wheat tortilla. Wheat tortilla made in this manner should be eaten continuously for two to three weeks. This remedy will tone up the stomach and improve the appetite.
  • The herb sage is also effective in reducing the chances of getting Anorexia. If you will prepare a tea form the sage leaves and drinks it on a daily basis.
  • You can take few pieces of pineapple slices regularly as your breakfast. You will feel craving for food throughout the day. This is the best treatment for Anorexia.
  • Water is the basic remedy to anorexia. Unless your digestive system is not cleansed, you will not feel hungry and your anorexia will not be cured. Water does the first step. Intake of warm water cleanses the digestive system.
  • Only 2 spoon mint juice in the morning helps to increase your hunger. Within a few days of taking mint juice, you will see a marked change in your eating habit. You will feel more craving for food.
  • Eat salad 10 minutes before having your food. This may comprise of cabbage, tomatoes, cucumbers, beets and capsicums. Sprinkle a little rock salt and squeeze half of the lemon on it, along with a pinch of black pepper.
  • Prepare dough with flour and sour grape juice, adding a pinch of rock salt. Make chapattis out of this dough. They will enhance the appetite of person, thereby helping cure anorexia.
  • Consume tomatoes, preferably raw. You can also use them, as an ingredient, in various preparations.

Anorexia Treatment and Advice

  • Anorexia is disorder born mainly out of low self image. The people suffering from Anorexia should learn to fill that void which they ‘think’ they have. We should learn to respect love ourselves unconditionally.
  • They must also make sure to have fiber. The main thing fiber does is regulate digestion. Things like oatmeal, fruits, vegetables and whole wheat products should be eaten regularly by the person.
