Acidity

Acidity refers to excess secretion of acid by the glands present in the stomach.  It is one of the commonest problems prevailing and causes extreme discomfort and agony. The hydrochloric acid secreted by the stomach aids in digestion by further secreting the enzyme known as pepsin. Pepsin breaks down food into smaller particles thus helping release energy.

This excess of acid travels through the oesophagus into the throat causing a symptom commonly known as hearburn. Symptoms further precipitated are loss of appetite , dyspepsia and indigestion.

Causes of Acidity

There are numerous reasons which cause Acidity, Few of the most common ones are;

  • Consuming food that is spicy and oily.
  • Overeating, improper chewing.
  • Stress and distorted sleep pattern.
  • Social hazards like cigarette smoking and alcohol abuse.
  • Taking medicines empty stomach especially Non-steroidal Anti inflammatory drugs.
  • Pregnancy.

Home Remedies For Acidity

  • Chewing tulsi (holy basil) is an effective remedy for acidity.
  • Banana, watermelon, and cucumber help keep acidity at bay.
  • Consuming gur {jaggery}, misri{ refined sugar} also helps curb acid reflux.
  • Eating yogurt gives immediate relief.
  • A glass of hot water with lemon forty-five minutes before meals helps in  digestion of the food. The potassium present in lemon neutralizes the acid.
  • Drinking cold milk is beneficial for patients suffering from acidity especially if consumed at night.
  • Fresh apple cider vinegar with honey in a glass of water before meals reduces acidity.
  • Amla taken with sugar candy powder and water also helps curb acid reflux.
  • Saunf (Aniseed) boiled in water and should be left overnight , the strained water taken with a teaspoon of honey helps cure acidity.
  • Grind black pepper,with rock salt and take ˝ tsp. with water after meals in the morning and evening.
  • Drinking coconut milk also helps prevent acidity.

Prevention is better than cure.

  • Lifestyle changes- Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy for sure prevents acidity.
  • Decrease the use of pain killers like aspirin, diclofenac, ibuprofen.
  • Take small balanced meal with less oil and spices. Do not overeat.
  • Have dinner 2-3 hours before going to bed.
  • Do not drink water immediately before and after meals.
  • Maintain an upright posture for sometime after meals.
  • Do not skip meals or keep your stomach empty for long hours.
  • Drink plenty water, atleast 8-10 glasses a day.
  • Quit smoking and alcohol.
  • Decrease your caffeine intake.
  • Last but not the least avoid stress. Remain calm and happy.
